SOMERS, N.Y. - Somers resident Gina Arena confirmed this week that she is running for state Senate in the newly-formed 42nd District.
A Republican, she aims to unseat incumbent Sen. Pete Harckham (D-South Salem). Both hopefuls have secured the necessary signatures to ensure that their names will appear on the ballot this November. The deadline for filing the nominating petitions was Thursday, April 7.
“I’m excited, energized, and ready to get started,” Arena said Monday, April 11.
Monday was the deadline given by an upstate judge to Albany lawmakers to come up with new bipartisan-supported maps for Congress and the state Senate and Assembly or face having the process handed over to a court-appointed special master. Harckham had represented the 40th District, of which Somers was -- and still remains -- a part. The legal complications posed by the redistricting flap would certainly give any new candidate pause, but this is not the working mom of eight’s first time at bat.
Arena ran against incumbent County Legislator Kitley Covill in 2019 in District 2, which includes Somers, North Salem, Bedford, Lewisboro, Pound Ridge, and Mount Kisco. Although unsuccessful, she wasn’t discouraged. Arena gave it another shot last year after Covill announced she wouldn’t seek a third term in office.
